1 July 2009, Singapore: Jetstar Asia has today launched a new daily direct service to Penang, marking Jetstar’s 17th destination from Singapore and 4th Malaysian city now served through its expanding intra Asia network.
The new low fare A320 services now grow Jetstar’s weekly flights between Singapore and Malaysia up to 88 times weekly, and entrenches Malaysia as the biggest travel market for Jetstar from Singapore.
Jetstar also operates to Kuala Lumpur up to three times daily, Kuching daily and Kota Kinabalu 4 times weekly from Singapore.
From 1 October 2009* Jetstar services on the Singapore-Penang route will then further expand to double daily or 14 times weekly services.
Jetstar Asia and Valuair Chief Executive Officer Ms Chong Phit Lian said Malaysia presented some exciting growth opportunities for the Jetstar network.
“Malaysia is a vital player in Jetstar’s growing Pan Asian network and we are thrilled today to start our new daily service to the historic city of Penang,” Ms Chong said.
“The daily service which will revert to twice daily from October is creating real low fare access for both Singaporeans and the growing number of our passengers travelling through Singapore on the Jetstar or Qantas network.”
In celebration of the inaugural flight, Jetstar, Sunway Hotel Georgetown and Berjaya Georgetown Hotel will be sponsoring ten teams of two, to take part in the Penang Jetsaver Light Challenge.
Teams taking part in the Penang Jetsaver Light Challenge, will travel on the inaugural service and will be challenged to experience Penang for one day with the savings gained from “travelling light” with Jetstar.
Jetsaver Light passengers travel for a fare SGD15/ RM 30 less than the normal Jetsaver fare when travelling with hand-carry luggage only. Teams will have SGD 60/RM 120 to spend, the equivalent of return savings of two people.
The ten teams were selected based on their submission of the “five things they want to do in Penang” contest held over two weeks.
Jetstar’s Singapore-Penang all inclusive fares (Jetsaver Light) are now available from SGD 48 or RM 95 one way at Jetstar.com.
An all-new Jetstar innovation for the benefit of the airline’s passengers is a unique Lowest Fare Finder application at Jetstar.com.
“Our new Lowest Fare Finder application allows our passengers to search a particular flight, for example Singapore-Penang over a period of 30 days at Jetstar.com. The Lowest Fare Finder is a simple and easy-to-use tool, which clearly shows the lowest available fare on each day.
“This means our passengers can quickly determine what day they may be able to get the lowest fare. This is all part of our commitment to making our all day every day low fares even more accessible,” Ms Chong said.
Jetstar backs its every day low fares commitment with the Jetstar Price Beat Guarantee, which means when booking on Jetstar at a similar date and time the airline will beat any competitor by 10 per cent.
“Jetstar’s low fares and expanding network puts us in a solid position to stimulate more travel to some of the most exciting destinations in Asia,” Ms Chong said.
“A large percentage of passengers on our first service to Penang are travelling on our super low all inclusive fares of SGD 38 or RM 75 one way at Jetstar.com.
“With Jetstar’s all day every day low fares and our Price Beat Guarantee we look forward to welcoming more Asian travelers on our services who can now spend less on the airfare and more on the stay in Penang.”
“This marks a significant step in expanding tourism between Singapore and Penang, especially when Jetstar Asia increases to twice daily flights in October. The additional flight not only increases commercial opportunities, but also creates more opportunities for friends and family to visit each other,” said Yang Amat Berhormat Lim Guan Eng, Chief Minister of Penang.
He added, “We definitely anticipate more Singaporeans to visit the food city of Malaysia with increased accessibility, connectivity and attractive low fares”.
